Captain’s Log: Stardate, 51757.6
Plot: A meeting with the Resistance.
The ‘A’ Plot: Aboard the defence satellite, Raynor is becoming worried at how long Azonan’s data download is taking. Although the Andorian points out that downloading an entire network database through a subspace channel is going to take time, Raynor continues to glance nervously around the maintenance space. He spots a flashing light on the interior security sensor, and realises that it means it is active, and that it is possible they are being watched. His suspicions are confirmed a moment later as the transporter reception pad in the corner of the space hums into life. Azonan reacts quickly, disconnecting power to the device, and causing it to shut down mid-transport, which is terminal for the unfortunate transportee.
Back on the Robert Scott, Selvek is monitoring the sensors for potential danger. He notices movement in the shipyards where a newly-completed Jem’Hadar cruiser is beginning to power up. Realising it is moving in their general direction, he sends a burst message to the boarding party to warn them. The data download is nearly complete, but needs a little more time, so Azonan tells Raynor to exit the satellite interior and prepare to return to the ship. He will follow as soon as he has the data.
As the cruiser approaches, it appears that the crew is testing its weapons, and Selvek concludes that it is coming to investigate the intruders on the satellite. Azonan completes the download and kicks himself straight down the entry passage into space. Raynor launches himself off the surface as he passes, and as both move beyond the shields, Selvek beams them back aboard the cloaked ship. Quinn gets them out of the immediate area just as the cruiser closes and destroys the compromised satellite with overwhelming firepower.
Azonan hands the downloaded data to Selvek to back up, then asks to speak to Konin alone, choosing a location away from any weapons. He explains what they discovered about Rebekah Konin’s involvement in the invasion. The commodore is quiet for a moment, as he works out what this means for their mission. Finally, he announces that they must still rescue her, but will need to put her in secure confinement for the trip home. They can’t lock her in a cabin, as the ship’s sleeping berths are all in the same room, so he asks Azonan to assemble a cell in the hold from materials on the ship.
On their return to the main cabin, they find Raynor and Selvek have been able to use the data download to locate a number of the people on their rescue list. They begin planning how to get the various targets to safety in a coordinated fashion. Five of them appear to be under house-arrest, but their locations are unshielded, meaning they can be beamed out easily, and four more, including Rebekah Konin, are in the Reyna Institute. The locations of the remaining three are unknown, but they might be able to get some information from the local resistance if they can find them.
At this point, Selvek picks up an encrypted message from the surface. Once decoded, it reveals a time index and a location in woodlands about 70 km outside Rixx. It looks like this might be for the hoped-for meeting with the resistance, but Konin is wary of traps, so he decides to take only a limited team: Raynor, Quinn and himself. Selvek and Azonan will remain on the Robert Scott to work on the secure cell.
Beaming down a few kilometers from the coordinates, they find themselves on a track through thick forest. They approach their rendezvous cautiously through a ravine, but are surprised by half-a-dozen armed individuals. As they stop and lower their weapons, a human steps forward and asks for their identities. Konin responds and she glances over at an unarmed man before relaxing, welcoming them to the resistance.
She asks them to disarm fully, before inviting them to join her in a small shelter above the ravine, which she explains was built for watchmen in the past. Quinn gets involved in an argument with one of the resistance members over his sgian-dubh, primarily because they won’t use its proper name.
The resistance leader identifies herself as Keldra Foro, a civilian scientist, then introduces the rest of her team. Konin notes that only one of them is Betazoid, and she admits that the native population have proved very reluctant to take up arms, a result of Betazed’s pacifist culture. Raynor recognises one of the men as a former soldier from the Cardassian Border Wars, and Foro confirms that many of her people are ex-Starfleet.
Foro is keen to get hold of the supplies sent by Starfleet, so they make arrangements to drop them at an isolated cave complex where they can be hidden from Dominion sensor scans. They also exchange intelligence reports, before Konin asks about the three rescue targets they have been unable to locate. Foro tells them that one of them died during the invasion, while another, one Luther Sloan, disappeared around the same time. She does not recognise the third. Raynor suddenly realises that he has seen Sloan before, in surveillance footage from the time of Heltin Adred’s disappearance.
Asked about the Reyna Institute, Foro smiles and says she has been waiting for that one. Gesturing to the Betazoid, she introduces him as Eilun Suder, and he explains that he knows the Institute well. His brother was treated there some years ago, and he made several visits to the building. He can provide basic plans of the structure and will join them to help plan their raid.
The discussion is interrupted by disruptor fire outside the shelter, and one of the sentries shouts that Jem’Hadar have found them. Konin insists that his team should provide cover while the locals escape. This plan works well, until Quinn twists his ankle as they retreat to the exfiltration site, forcing the others to carry him.
Back on the ship, they begin planning for the rescue mission, pausing only to drop off the supplies for the resistance.
The Arc: It appears they have a name to investigate regarding Adred’s disappearance.
Observations: The Robert Scott’s interior is not luxurious, boasting a narrow galley, and individual bunk berths recessed into the walls of a common living area, similar to those on a runabout or California-class vessel.
Betazed’s long history of cultural pacifism has led to the oddity that the “Betazoid Resistance” consists mostly of humans and other offworld species. The majority of Keldra Foro’s colleagues are ex-Starfleet, and fought in the Cardassian Border Wars. Foro is slightly bitter about this, feeling that the Betazoids should be doing more to resist their conquerers.
Dialogue: Betazoid resistance member to Quinn: “Hand over the pig sticker!”
References: The sole Betazoid member of Foro’s resistance cell is one Eilun Suder, who is familiar with the Reyna Institute from when his brother was treated there. Several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager featured Lon Suder, a former member of the Maquis, who became a provisional officer on U.S.S. Voyager. Given his emotional issues, it is possible he is the brother in question.
Although the Lexington crew have no way to know this, Luther Sloan will make an appearance on station Deep Space 9 in the new year, so it seems that he got off Betazed alive (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: “Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges”).
