Pinky is a thin and gawky boy in his late teens, dressed in tattered clothes and a battered flat cap.

Biography

Born into the law­less, dis­ease-rid­den poverty of East Lon­don’s Spit­al­field slum, the eighth son of an illit­er­ate Irish labour­er, Pinky had no altern­at­ive but to quickly learn to fend for him­self. Using the only tools avail­able to him, a quick wit and nimble fin­gers, he plied his illi­cit trade empty­ing the over­stuffed pock­ets found in abund­ance in the nearby City. No one at home ever thought or cared to ask the source of his fre­quent dona­tions to the stew pot or the rent book.

Before reach­ing his teens, he had lost both of his par­ents to chol­era and, find­ing him­self home­less, fell into the hands of one of Lon­don’s more viol­ent crim­in­al gangs. He refuses to be drawn on the details of his time with them but his pained and shame­faced expres­sion when ques­tioned is a not entirely con­vin­cing cov­er for a real and iron-rigid fear of the gallows.

He came to the atten­tion of the Min­istry when, attempt­ing to escape the clutches of the gang, he was caught by Cap­tain Cur­ruth­ers break­ing into his lodgings. Sub­sequently dis­cov­er­ing that some of Pinky’s pur­suers might not be entirely human, Cur­ruth­ers decided to spon­sor his appren­tice­ship with the Min­istry in return for a prom­ise to stay on the straight and narrow.
