A Low Youth.
Pinky is a thin and gawky boy in his late teens, dressed in tattered clothes and a battered flat cap.
Born into the lawless, disease-ridden poverty of East London’s Spitalfield slum, the eighth son of an illiterate Irish labourer, Pinky had no alternative but to quickly learn to fend for himself. Using the only tools available to him, a quick wit and nimble fingers, he plied his illicit trade emptying the overstuffed pockets found in abundance in the nearby City. No one at home ever thought or cared to ask the source of his frequent donations to the stew pot or the rent book.
Before reaching his teens, he had lost both of his parents to cholera and, finding himself homeless, fell into the hands of one of London’s more violent criminal gangs. He refuses to be drawn on the details of his time with them but his pained and shamefaced expression when questioned is a not entirely convincing cover for a real and iron-rigid fear of the gallows.
He came to the attention of the Ministry when, attempting to escape the clutches of the gang, he was caught by Captain Curruthers breaking into his lodgings. Subsequently discovering that some of Pinky’s pursuers might not be entirely human, Curruthers decided to sponsor his apprenticeship with the Ministry in return for a promise to stay on the straight and narrow.
